STAMP HISTORY: Part of the North American Wildlife series, this vintage postage stamp depicts a Mockingbird, a medium-sized songbird known for its ability to mimic other birds’ songs. The stamp’s artwork features the mockingbird perched on a branch in a wooded red flower setting. This unused 22-cent gummed stamp celebrates the North American continent's rich biodiversity, showcasing this species in its typical environment, emphasizing the importance of habitat in wildlife conservation.
The Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) is an intelligent, highly vocal songbird found across North America, particularly in the U.S., Mexico, and the Caribbean. Incredibly vocal, with the ability to mimic over 200 songs and sounds, including other birds, insects, and even human-made noises, the Mockingbird prefers open woodlands, suburban areas, and gardens, often seen perching on fences, trees, or rooftops. The Mockingbird is highly territorial, defending its nesting area aggressively against larger birds, cats, and even humans.
The Mockingbird is the official state bird of Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas. Florida Southern College once had a mockingbird mascot named "Mimus", based on the bird’s Latin name Mimus polyglottos. In The Hunger Games, the Mockingjay (a fictional hybrid of a mockingbird and a jabberjay) becomes a symbol of rebellion and resilience. The Mockingbird is often used in environmental and bird conservation programs, symbolizing awareness, adaptability, and the beauty of nature.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Mockingbird has deep symbolic meaning in various cultures, often representing communication, intelligence, protection, and individuality. Mockingbirds symbolize the power of communication, self-expression, and creativity. Their ability to mimic reminds us to find our own voice rather than merely echoing others. Known for their ability to thrive in various environments, they represent quick thinking and resilience. Their sharp memory and complex songs symbolize wisdom and adaptability. Despite their small size, mockingbirds fiercely protect their nests, even attacking hawks, cats, and larger animals. This represents defending loved ones, standing up for oneself, and fearlessness. In Native American traditions, hearing a mockingbird’s song is often seen as a good omen, bringing happiness and optimism. Their unique singing patterns symbolize the importance of being true to oneself. In literature, mockingbirds (as seen in To Kill a Mockingbird) are often used as a symbol of innocence and purity.
SERIES HISTORY: On June 13, 1987, the United States Postal Service (USPS) issued the North American Wildlife postage stamp series, a commemorative sheet featuring 50 different gummed 22-cent stamps. This release celebrated the rich diversity of North American fauna, showcasing species from various regions, including Alaska and Hawaii. Renowned wildlife artist Chuck Ripper illustrated the series, capturing the essence of each species with remarkable accuracy and detail. The stamps not only highlight the animals but also incorporate elements of their natural habitats, emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation. USPS and The Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC) originally hoped to represent the State Animal of all 50 states. However, many states do not have a State Animal or share a State Animal with another state. Instead, USPS and CSAC opted to include avifauna, mammals, amphibians, and invertebrates from across the continent. Notably, the First Day of Issue ceremony took place at the Canadian Philatelic Exhibition (CAPEX) in Toronto, Canada, marking the third time a U.S. stamp issue had its inaugural event outside the United States. The North American Wildlife stamp series remains a favorite among collectors and nature enthusiasts, serving as a vivid reminder of the continent's rich and varied wildlife heritage.
