STAMP HISTORY: Part of the North American Wildlife series, this vintage postage stamp depicts a Red Fox in a natural setting, likely a woodland or grassland, showcasing its sleek, reddish-orange fur, bushy tail (often called a "brush"), and alert expression. The stamp’s artwork illustrates the fox in a realistic, detailed style, highlighting its sharp features, pointed ears, and agile stance. This unused 22-cent gummed stamp celebrates the North American continent's rich biodiversity, showcasing this iconic wild animal in its typical environment, emphasizing the importance of habitat in wildlife conservation.

The Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) is one of the most adaptable and widespread mammals in North America, known for its intelligence, agility, and cunning nature. Most red foxes have reddish-orange fur, a white chest and underbelly, black legs, and a bushy tail with a white tip. However, some display variations like silver or cross fox colorations. Red Foxes typically weigh 8–15 pounds and are about 3 feet long, including their tail. Foxes have keen senses of vision and hearing, able to detect small prey even under snow. Found in forests, grasslands, mountains, and even urban areas, red foxes are highly adaptable. Foxes are known for their stealth, speed, and problem-solving skills, making them successful hunters.

The Fox is used as a mascot by several colleges, universities, businesses, and sports teams due to its symbolism of intelligence, agility, cunning, and adaptability. Leicester City F.C. (The Foxes) of the English Premier League is nicknamed "The Foxes", and their badge features a fox's head, symbolizing agility and strategy in play. The Quad City Foxes are a minor league soccer club in Illinois/Iowa that uses the fox to represent speed and intelligence. Fox Racing is an extreme sports and motocross brand that uses a fox logo. The athletic teams of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York are known as the Red Foxes, inspired by the foxes that roam the Hudson River Valley; their mascot, "Frankie the Red Fox," represents cleverness, speed, and resilience. The University of Dubuque in Iowa are known as the Dubuque Foxes.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Red Fox has deep symbolic meaning across different cultures, often representing intelligence, transformation, and adaptability. In many Native American tribes, the fox is seen as a clever trickster, teaching lessons about wisdom, survival, and adaptability. Some tribes view it as a guide and protector, especially in times of change. Among the Plains tribes, the fox is associated with cunning strategy and keen observation. If a fox appears in a dream, it might be urging you to stay alert, trust your instincts, or adapt to a situation. As a totem animal, the fox represents cleverness, strategy, and resourcefulness, guiding individuals to think outside the box.

SERIES HISTORY: On June 13, 1987, the United States Postal Service (USPS) issued the North American Wildlife postage stamp series, a commemorative sheet featuring 50 different gummed 22-cent stamps. This release celebrated the rich diversity of North American fauna, showcasing species from various regions, including Alaska and Hawaii. Renowned wildlife artist Chuck Ripper illustrated the series, capturing the essence of each species with remarkable accuracy and detail. The stamps not only highlight the animals but also incorporate elements of their natural habitats, emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation. USPS and The Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC) originally hoped to represent the State Animal of all 50 states. However, many states do not have a State Animal or share a State Animal with another state. Instead, USPS and CSAC opted to include avifauna, mammals, amphibians, and invertebrates from across the continent. Notably, the First Day of Issue ceremony took place at the Canadian Philatelic Exhibition (CAPEX) in Toronto, Canada, marking the third time a U.S. stamp issue had its inaugural event outside the United States. The North American Wildlife stamp series remains a favorite among collectors and nature enthusiasts, serving as a vivid reminder of the continent's rich and varied wildlife heritage.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of additional postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
