STAMP HISTORY: Part of the North American Wildlife series, this vintage postage stamp showcases the Canada Goose and its distinctive black head and neck, white cheek patches, and brownish-gray body. The wings are outstretched, highlighting its impressive wingspan. The background likely represents a marsh or open water area, typical of the goose’s migratory stopovers. This unused 22-cent gummed stamp celebrates the North American continent's rich biodiversity, showcasing this iconic bird in its typical environment, emphasizing the importance of habitat in wildlife conservation.

The Canada Goose is one of North America's most recognizable waterfowl, known for its distinctive black head and neck, white cheek patches, and brownish-gray body. It is a migratory bird that thrives in wetlands, lakes, rivers, and grassy fields across the continent. Native to North America, Canada Geese breed in Canada and the northern U.S. and migrate south to the U.S., Mexico, and even parts of Europe. They are highly adaptable, found in wetlands, lakes, rivers, parks, and even urban areas. Canada Geese fly in distinct V-formations to reduce air resistance and conserve energy during long-distance migrations. Migrations can cover thousands of miles, from northern breeding grounds to southern wintering areas.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Canada Goose carries deep spiritual meaning across cultures, symbolizing loyalty, perseverance, teamwork, and guidance. Its distinct behaviors—such as migrating in V-formations, lifelong pair bonding, and strong family ties—serve as powerful metaphors for personal and spiritual growth. Canada Geese are monogamous, often mating for life. This symbolizes faithfulness, long-lasting relationships, and deep emotional connections. Seeing a goose may remind you to cherish and honor your commitments to loved ones. Their V-shaped flight formation helps them conserve energy, with each goose taking turns leading. This represents mutual support, shared leadership, and the importance of working together to achieve success. Canada Geese migrate thousands of miles, facing storms, winds, and harsh conditions. They symbolize resilience, determination, and the ability to overcome obstacles on life’s journey. Geese return to the same nesting and wintering grounds each year, reminding us of the importance of home, roots, and a sense of belonging. Their message may encourage you to reconnect with your heritage or find a supportive community. The Canada Goose is a powerful spiritual guide, teaching lessons of devotion, teamwork, perseverance, and leadership. Whether as a spirit animal, totem, or dream symbol, it reminds us to trust in our direction, honor our commitments, and support those around us.

SERIES HISTORY: On June 13, 1987, the United States Postal Service (USPS) issued the North American Wildlife postage stamp series, a commemorative sheet featuring 50 different gummed 22-cent stamps. This release celebrated the rich diversity of North American fauna, showcasing species from various regions, including Alaska and Hawaii. Renowned wildlife artist Chuck Ripper illustrated the series, capturing the essence of each species with remarkable accuracy and detail. The stamps not only highlight the animals but also incorporate elements of their natural habitats, emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation. USPS and The Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC) originally hoped to represent the State Animal of all 50 states. However, many states do not have a State Animal or share a State Animal with another state. Instead, USPS and CSAC opted to include avifauna, mammals, amphibians, and invertebrates from across the continent. Notably, the First Day of Issue ceremony took place at the Canadian Philatelic Exhibition (CAPEX) in Toronto, Canada, marking the third time a U.S. stamp issue had its inaugural event outside the United States. The North American Wildlife stamp series remains a favorite among collectors and nature enthusiasts, serving as a vivid reminder of the continent's rich and varied wildlife heritage.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of additional postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
